Brás Neighborhood Tour

BrásBrás Neighborhood (Huge Garment District). Brás is located in the center of the largest city in the country. The region where many Italian immigrants settled down once, is today characterized by being one of the biggest commercial centers of clothing of Brazil. The district remained as a provincial feature, with many farms and sites for its extension until developed with the arrival of coffee and immigrants.

It was a meeting point between the Italian and workers who caught the train in Santos and landed in São Paulo, in the Brás station, built in 1867. Progress finally arrived with the installation of small factories and shops. In the 40s, the north-easterners seeking for opportunities began to migrate to São Paulo and, as the Italians did decades before, settled in the region close to the train station. Brás gradually lost the Italian characteristics and made room for the entry of the popular trade.
After the development in the 70s, the Brás became a trade center making clothes. People from all parts of Brazil visiting the neighborhood to buy clothes, which are usually sold wholesale or retail. The area fills up with merchants and fashion retailers who seek quality products with lower prices. In the neighborhood you can find fashion accessories and women’s clothing, men and children, as well as swimwear, intimate, home and bath.
