Morumbi Neighborhood ( São Paulo MCMansions). Morumbi or“green hills”in the native Indian (Tupi) language, grew out of a former tea farm. its rapid development during the last century was largely due to the efforts of engineer Oscar Americano in dividing up and populating the land.
The transfer of the state government`s headquarters to the Palacio dos Bandeirantes further accelerated immigration into the area. In the 1920s, the bourgeoisie of Sao Paulo moved in a southwestern direction from paulista to Jardins area, as well as to Morumbi and Santo Amaro, which made up the furthest reach of what is now considered the south area. Although separated from the center of Sao Paulo by the Pinheiros River, Morumbi is worth a visit if you are in town for more than a few days.
Aside from the architectural botanical and cultural highlights, its hilly, tree-lined avenues house some of the most luxurious private houses and apartment buildings in the city. Conversely, the erea is also home to the Favela (slum) of Paraisopolis.
