Pateo do Colégio – (São Paulo founding ground). College Schoolyard was the site where the city of São Paulo was born, from the construction of a small rammed-earth hut where met 13 Jesuits to found the first settlement, the Jesuits aimed to evangelize the natives.
At the time, located high on a hill and surrounded by the Tamanduateí and Anhangabaú rivers, the place called Vila Sao Paulo Piratininga was a strategic choice for safety.
The official ceremony of the city’s founding occurred on 25 January 1554. This is also the date of conversion of the Apostle Paul, which originated the name of the capital.
Today the complex houses several cultural activities. The museum consists of seven rooms, exhibition of religious art collections, an art gallery, Indian objects, a model of São Paulo in the sixteenth century, font and old belongings of Anchieta, among other things.
Visitors can also meet the Library Padre Antonio Vieira, which is a precious collection of history books, and participate in the Mass said by Jesuits. There are also conducted conferences, courses, crafts and painting workshops and classical music presentation.
